About

An architecture firm that knows this county building by building.

Jamestown, New York·Thirty five years·LEED accredited

The firm

Lake houses, historic buildings, and the boards that approve them.

Harrington Architecture is a small practice in Jamestown, New York. Most of its work is within an hour of the office: houses on Chautauqua Lake, renovations and new construction inside the Chautauqua Institution grounds, and the restoration of old commercial buildings downtown and in the historic districts of the county.

The firm has designed single-family and multi-family housing, offices, churches, schools, and public buildings, and a large share of that work involved an existing building, often a historic one. That experience is why local owners bring the firm the hard projects: the ones with a review board, a tax credit application, or a 19th century structure attached.

The practice is LEED accredited. How much energy a building uses is planned in from the first sketch, in new houses and in buildings from the 1800s, and the firm finds the grants and credits that help pay for it.

How a project goes

Listen first, then draw.

  1. A long first conversation

What the building is for, who uses it, what has to stay, and what the budget really is. Clients describe this as the part that made the rest easy.

  2. A first look before design

For older buildings and development projects, a first look at the numbers, the building code, and the credits available, so the design starts from what can actually be built.

  3. Approvals handled

The Chautauqua Architectural Review Board, historic district commissions, the State Historic Preservation Office (the state office that reviews work on historic buildings), planning boards. The firm has been in front of all of them for decades and designs with their standards in mind from the start.

Why owners call

Local owners bring the firm the hard projects. A review board, a tax credit application, a very old building.

Where the work is

Chautauqua County and the region around it.

Most projects are in Chautauqua County, with work across Western New York and into northwest Pennsylvania.

History

Two firms, one body of work.

The practice traces back to Harrington Sandberg Architects, founded in Jamestown in 1991. Over the following two decades that firm grew to around thirty-five people, added engineering, and completed schools, hospitals, courthouses, and housing across the region, including the Chautauqua County Courts building in Mayville, the Buffalo State student union addition, and the renovation of Packard Manor at Chautauqua Institution.

Harrington Architecture was founded in 2010 by Donald Harrington, who had led that firm, to return to a smaller practice with a closer hand in each project. The buildings on this site come from both chapters.

Recognition

AIA Buffalo/Western New York design awards, including the First Award for residential design for Packard Manor and a design award for the Buffalo State student union.
