The family had outgrown a 1970s split-level.
A 1970s split-level, expanded for a growing family.
The house was designed in the 1970s as a split-level single family home, and the family living in it needed more room.
The project added a primary suite above the existing garage, a new garage addition beside it, and a new canopy and porch at the main entry. Materials were selected for the additions and the existing house together, so old and new look like one building.
The challenge was keeping the house in balance. A new garage and a second story are a lot to add to a split-level, and the design had to bring them into the look and feel of the house without making the additions look too big for it.

Additions that belong to the house.
